There are two common ways to remove old wallpaper and to prepare a wall:
Start with placing a drop sheet down to protect your floors.
Use a wire brush to score the wallpaper.
Mix the remover, ensuring you follow the instructions on the packet. Pour the remover into a paint tray. Using a roller, roll the mixture onto the walls, making sure the paper is nice and wet. Using a paint scraper, scrape away the wallpaper. If necessary, reapply and soak to remove more difficult areas.
When all paper is removed, rinse the wall with water.
Ensure you cover any electrical points with tape. Place your protective drop sheet on the floor. Make sure the area is well ventilated. Hold the steamer against the wall for about 30 seconds or until the paper starts to peel off.
As you move the steamer along the wall, follow behind with a scraper.
The easiest way to remove stubborn wallpaper is to fill a spray bottle or pump sprayer with hot water then and dampen the first panel thoroughly. After allowing a few minutes for it to absorb, peel the panel back at its top left corner. In most cases the paper will lift as desired.
Mix the fabric softener with equal parts warm water and spread it on the walls using a sponge, spray bottle or paint roller. Let it soak for twenty minutes before scraping the wallpaper from the wall.
When mixed with water, vinegar's acetic acid helps to break up wallpaper adhesive. Combined with scoring the paper and using a gentle scraper, you can use this method to safely and reliably remove wallpaper from almost any wall surface.
Once the wallpaper is cleaned, repaired, and primed, you can paint it as you would any other surface.
It is likely you will need two coats, with plenty of drying time in between.
This will be especially necessary if the wallpaper has a bold pattern, or if you are applying light-colored paint over dark-colored wallpaper.
Start by adding a skim coat to the walls using a 30cm plastering blade and joint compound. Then using a pole sander, give the wall a good sanding, ensure you focus on all the high spots. Wipe down with wet cloths to remove any dust. Your walls are now uniform and smooth and ready for a fresh coat of paint.
Use a putty knife to lift the edge of the paper. Use your hands to peel the paper from the wall, pulling as close to the wall as you can to avoid tearing the paper. If the paper does rip, loosen another corner and start again. Repeat the process around the entire room.
If you don't want the hassle, or you don't have time to remove your wallpaper yourself, you can hire a professional service to remove old wallpaper. Most painting companies, including Painting Newcastle, offer wallpaper removal.
